Part 1- Short Answer

Answer each of the following questions briefly and honestly. Your answers should be limited to about 200 words—but don't worry if it is a bit shorter or longer.

1. What challenge do you think the York community faces that is crucially important to address, and that you personally would like to help solve? Why do you believe this is so important? What steps might you take to bring about positive change? What have you done in the past that would prepare you to contribute to solving this challenge?

2. If you could design your own college class that would help prepare students to be more engaged and valuable citizens, what would it be called and what would people learn in that class?

3. What experiences have you had with people that are different from you in some way (other cultures, other orientations, etc.)? What did those experiences teach you?

4. If you could pick the college students you would like to work with as part of the Hope Scholars community, what would they be like? What would be their primary characteristics? Why are those traits important? And how would you contribute to a team like this?

5. Why do you want to be an Hope Scholar? How will it impact your education and community work? What experiences have you already had at YCP that have prepared you to be an Hope Scholar?

Part 2- About You

We want to get to know you, your plans, your dreams, and most importantly what you've been doing or have done to help you achieve them. We crave innovation and creativity! Please choose a creative medium (video, narrated slideshow, podcast, portfolio or artworks or designs, social media site, etc.) that sets you apart and identifies you as an innovator.

Tell us a story (using video, pictures, audio, and/or words) that helps us understand something important about you and how you've been spending your time and energy especially in your happiest, most productive, and/or most creative moments.
Show us something you created, in words, pictures, music, video, or however else you'd like that shows your innovative spirit.
Tell (or show) us about a new business venture/initiative/program you'd like to start, (or one you have started) or another goal you have for your future career. Again, you can use words, pictures, audio, or video.

You have two options for submitting your project:

You can send us a URL link that will allow us to access something you have created on YouTube or other media sites.
You could submit a Microsoft Word Document, PDF, or PowerPoint that tells your story.

If you wish to submit a digital product (video, website, etc), type the web address (URL) to a YouTube video, image, or another resource. Copy and paste the URL, and be sure the link is correct.

*You may want to upload the video or audio file to YouTube and set the video to "unlisted." This will make the file unsearchable, but viewable to anyone that has the URL link. You may also send the physical file to admissions@ycp.edu with your name.

Informed Consent- Hope Scholars Program

The learning survey you are completing contains a number of questions that can help us to gauge the habits of mind innovative students bring with them to college. To help us to better understand the kinds of students who succeed in the Hope Scholars community, we’d like to keep some of the information that we gather in the admission process and use it for program improvement. We might also share what we learn with other scholars through publication and presentations. In most cases, we’ll just share aggregated statistics about the percentage of applicants who answered questions a certain way. In some cases, we might use some sample answers.

All of the information collected will be confidential. Your name will not be associated with the responses.

You are not required to give your consent, and whether you consent or not will have no influence on inclusion in the scholar program for which you applied. The scholar program review committee will not know whether you’ve consented or not.
